For example, you can create a boy with a face straight out of South Park, wearing a football helmet, a snorkel, flippers, a soccer jersey, and a backpack. You can pick from a number of goofy faces and outfits to make all sorts of perfectly absurd characters. The first time you go online, you'll make a custom avatar that, believe it or not, is even zanier than any of the game's over-the-top golfers. It's good, then, that there's an excellent online mode to complement the game's tried-and-true gameplay. If all you had to look forward to were a new swing, it would be difficult to recommend Out of Bounds. It'll take a round or so for you to become accustomed to the new swing, but it's worth the effort because, as in real golf, you're playing by feel rather than by staring at a meter pressing buttons. Putting uses the same mechanic, but emits a beep at 25 percent, sparkles at 50 percent, beeps again at 75 percent, and sparkles again at 100 percent. When it's smaller than the red brackets that indicate the maximum tolerance for a decent shot, you hit X again. A large circle appears around the ball, and as the club head approaches the ball, the circle shrinks. The third press of the X button determines the shot's accuracy. The club head sparkles at 50 percent, but it's solely up to you to gauge any other power level. With the new swing, you press the X button to start your swing and then press it again to set your shot's power, which is determined by how far your golfer is into his backswing. But the new swing works really well and makes the old method feel antiquated-which it is. You can still use the traditional meter with the three-button-press method if you'd like both methods give you a limited number of power hits and let you press the D pad to change where you're striking the ball. The big change to Hot Shots' gameplay is an all-new swing mechanic. Thankfully, the realistic course designs are pretty good, and they can get quite challenging depending on pin placement or wind conditions. Granted, you'll be playing different holes on the course with different rules and stipulations, but putting 10 hours into the game with only four courses available to you is frustrating. Because there are so few courses, you're forced to play each of them at least five times before unlocking a new one. You'll also unlock the rest of the game's 15 anime-inspired golfers and six courses. As in previous games, you start by choosing one of the two unlocked golfers, then you compete in a series of nine and 18-hole tournaments to unlock equipment. Hot Shots' main single-player mode is Challenge mode. But unlike many other games that make extensive use of the hard drive, Hot Shots' install pays immediate dividends with quick load times throughout the game. The first thing you'll notice when you pop the disc in your PlayStation 3 is a 10-plus minute install to your hard drive. The new swing mechanic isn't exactly revolutionary, but it works well. Even so, it's still a fun game that's worth a look if you're a fan of the series or arcade-style golf. That's the good news.and the bad news? Outside of a new swing mechanic and some enjoyable online play, there's little else new in Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. Big-headed cartoony golfers, realistic courses, fast-paced gameplay, and simple controls-you know what you're getting when you buy a Hot Shots Golf game. Ever since its first appearance on the original PlayStation, Hot Shots Golf has been a model of consistency. Then you meticulously run down the list repeating them over and over and You’re trying to increase vocabulary by writing down a list of words. Think about how it would be if you started with a few success stories that made you see how you were able to say or understand something.Įven if you wildly mistreated every conjugation, and the articles weren’t on point, you’d still have a feeling of “I can learn how to grasp this new language,” and that gives youįor example, starting with German grammar nearly murdered my desire to learn right at the beginning. “But wait, don’t you have to understand the rules before you can start learning how to speak, listen or even read?” Because grammar makes it boring and demanding which is not a great way to start your language journey. While grammar inevitably becomes more important it certainly isn’t the main thing for getting your language rolling. Sure, you might get away with flipping through a stack of flashcards or looking up the odd word here or there with a fast digital dictionary. You don’t have time to look up a word or check your grammar table. Even hitting the books between classes didn’t do much to level up my language skills.Īt least in the beginning or until you feel confident about having a casual conversation with a native stranger.īesides, conversations just so happen to be fluid. I spent about seven years in school with such textbooks and progressed marginally at best. If you’re also learning as part of a full school curriculum then you have several other classes to focus on which makes this even worse. Let’s take a look at some ways we learn in school that makes a lot of things difficult Writing, reading, speaking and (god forbid) grammar often turn into an overwhelming task that knocks you down and makes fluency seem like a cloudy speck on the horizon. What I mean is that there is a lot of focus on learning the full skill of a language at once. How often have you heard something like this? Maybe you’re even among the horde of so-called ‘failed’ language students? – and why,ĭon’t these systems create more fluent speakers now that we seem to stick with them so rigidly?Īs far as I can see, most conventional strategies, (let’s call them ‘how you learn in school’), are aimed at one size fits all and an outdated academic focus. “Didn’t you take French classes in school for like, five years?” The problem is that most people graduating, after five-seven years with a second language, have little to no clue about what to say the first time they meet a native speaker. Some ways of doing this, that you probably run into a lot, is what you might learn in school. Efficient meaning executing them properly. Hirata, who also actively participates in tie-up projects with JETRO Sao Paulo, says with an expectation for the promotion of Japanese food ingredients, "Over the past year, we held sake and awamori tasting events and wagyu beef tasting events at our restaurants. In Portuguese, it is called tartaruga, from which I named the Tata restaurant.” Another restaurant is named “KAME KAMI,” which makes sense. Turtles are known as a symbol of longevity and good luck. Speaking about the restaurant's name, Hirata explains, “I love turtles. Hirata’s analysis is that word-of-mouth communication increases credibility and also leads to an increase in repeat customers. On Instagram, the restaurant has accepted Leo Young, an influencer with a million followers who won in the TV show “MasterChef” as a partner of TATA SUSHI, and this has been effective in the PR of the restaurant. The restaurant's main promotion methods are Instagram and the word-of-mouth communication. “The problem is that there is no guarantee of continuous and stable imports,” Hirata noted. While he strongly wants various Japanese foods and ingredients, he faces many difficulties in procuring them. In addition, he is interested in Japanese eel and salmon roe, whose imports from Japan stopped, and strongly hopes that they will be imported again. He hopes to add more appeal to the hand-rolled sushi that Brazilians love to eat. Although they are all imports and priced high, Hirata insists that he will continue to maintain his commitment, saying, “The advantage of Japanese ingredients is that they are produced in accordance with tradition, which makes them safe to use and increases customer trust.” The Japanese ingredient we would like to see imported more in the future is seaweed from various regions of Japan. The Japanese ingredients and beverages used the most at his restaurant are sake, soy sauce, vinegar (for vinegared rice), dried bonito flakes and kelp (for soup stock), and sesame oil. The restaurant is one of the relaxing spots in the city, and the owner seems to be committed to providing the best in quality, environment, and hospitality from the customer's perspective. As for the cuisine, Hirata emphasizes, "Our goal is to steadily provide Japanese cuisine adapted to the tastes of Brazilians.” The interior of the restaurant has a refined design and quiet atmosphere, and the owner’s hope is that many busy businessmen come here for lunch to feel relaxed even if it is only during mealtime. He also visits Japanese sake breweries and purchases sake to convey the brewers' thoughts to the Brazilian market. “In recent years, Brazilians travel to Japan for business and other purposes, and their knowledge of sake has increased, so we would like importers to import more sake brands,” says Hirata. As for sake, Hirata gathers all the information he can find and recommends the sake that best suits each customers' taste. Hirata's wish is to provide customers with the freshest ingredients at a reasonable price. Most of the customers are between the ages of 30 and 50, and the restaurant's signature sushi and sashimi sets are the most frequently ordered items. Besides TATA SUSHI, he also operates Kame Kami, a Japanese restaurant inside an exclusive members-only sports club in Sao Paulo. At lunch time businessmen come from nearby offices, and at night, there are many couples on a date,” says Hirata. “The restaurant's clientele changes considerably depending on the time of day. The concept of TATA SUSHI is to offer contemporary Japanese food at an affordable price for many Brazilians to enjoy. Hirata is a professional, working as the owner and sushi chef, and also as the Director of the Associação Brasileira de Bares e Restaurantes (Abrasel) and Organizada pela Associação Brasileira de Gastronomia Japonesa (ABGJ), always keeping himself busy for the future of the industry. “Sixty-five of them work in the kitchen, hall, bar, and as cleaning staff, and five are administrative staff,” explains owner Luizinho Hirata, a third-generation Japanese-Brazilian. It is a medium-sized restaurant that can accommodate 90 people, but it has 70 employees. TATA SUSHI, opened in 2016, is a Japanese restaurant located in the Itaim Bibi district of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where high-end office buildings stand in a row. On March 19, 2021, LA CAR published “ What the Font? Typeface and Font Politics on America’s Roads. Photo credit: Donald MeekerĬlearview font example. Then, because this is a massive bureaucracy we’re dealing with, last year the FHWA reinstated the interim approval granted 14 years earlier.” In 2016, the approval was rescinded on the basis that earlier studies as to Clearview’s clarity weren’t so clear. Replacing all the traffic signs in the nation would be stratospherically expensive, of course, so Clearview was introduced on an optional basis, used mostly when old signs needed to be replaced anyway. Road Sign Fonts: The Mother Tongue of Our Vehicular Lives. On September 7, 2019, Car and Driver published an article called “ Highway Gothic vs Clearview: Battle of the U.S. The government could have spent a little more time and done a little more research to find a more suitable font for our nation’s highways. But why switch to Highway Gothic? It’s one of hundreds of free fonts that could have been chosen. You have to purchase a license to use Clearview. I think, as does the author of this 2016 New York Times Op-Ed, that it comes down to money. Many wonder why the Federal Highway Administration is going back to using Highway Gothic. It’s why your basic vision test (developed by ophthalmologist Herman Snellen in 1862) looks like this:Įxperts have known for scores of years that people with poor vision can have trouble seeing/interchanging letters. Depending on what fonts are being used, a lowercase “g,” “p,” or “q” can easily get mixed up-as can the lowercase “a,” “c,” “o,” and “e.” For uppercase letters, you have to think about “E,” “F,” and “P” or “D,” “C,” and “O.” These are all letters that tend to get interchanged with one another when your eyesight is not the best. Just the right/wrong curve or a bold or italic typeface can make a font difficult to read. And font sizes and styles really do matter.Īs we age and our eyesight changes, our eyes tend to see fonts differently. More people need to understand that there is a big difference between a serif and a sans serif font. The main difference between Clearview and Highway Gothic is that the former is a serif font (the letters have little feet and handles at the ends of the letter lines) and the latter is a sans serif font (the letter lines truncate without little feet and handles). It’s the difference between being able to clearly read highway/street signs from a distance, especially at night, and not being able to. What’s the big deal, right? Well, as someone who looks at fonts all day long and has created everything from postcards to billboard signs, this is a REALLY big deal. But for the past few years, FHWA has debated reverting back to Highway Gothic. Since 2004, the Federal Highway Administration has been updating highway signs using the Clearview font instead of the long-used Highway Gothic font. What’s in a name? Well, if your font name is Clearview, I’d say it’s pretty obvious.Īpparently, the federal government has decided otherwise. By Johanna Daproza, Director of Creative Services at TalentMEDIA Services The mood penalty is negated if the colonist eating it has a precept "Eating Nutrient paste" as "Don't mind" for their Ideoligion, making it a powerful choice for day-to-day work flow. But using it as such requires a pawn to manually produce nutrient paste meals, since animals can't use the dispenser. Nutrient paste is also the most efficient animal food, who don't care about mood, assuming it can eat the full 0.9 nutrition without overeating. Because pawns prefer normal meals over nutrient paste, you can set restrictions to prevent normal pawns from consuming all of the good meals, leaving them to the volatile ones. It is advised to not give nutrient paste to pawns with a trait that gives a negative modifier to mental break threshold, because they can push a pawn over the edge. However, nutrient paste meals give a -4 mood debuff, which ends up being -9 net mood compared to fine meals. Nutrient paste is a poor choice for caravans, given how quickly nutrient paste spoils and the tedious micro required to make stacks of them. This behavior can be exploited to stockpile meals, but their short shelf life of 0.75 days means they should be immediately frozen. This is done by limiting a pawn's area restriction to just a nutrient paste dispenser, or by simply drafting them. Should the pawn dispensing the meal be interrupted between dispensing and eating the meal, they will drop it. These meals can't normally be stockpiled. Typically, nutrient paste meals are dispensed by a hungry pawn and then immediately eaten they can't be produced by work bill, and animals won't use a dispenser. Nutrient paste meals are created at a powered nutrient paste dispenser instantly, using 0.3 nutrition of any food inside its hoppers. So I'm very supportive of Elon's idea- let's move quickly, let's try new ideas.ĭAVID HOLLERITH: Yeah. So all of this shouldn't really take more than a week to implement each, so we should have done that, like, a year ago. And blue ticks, they should become more- there should be a cost to it. There's a lot of bots that spamming my comment section when I open my tweets for comments. JULIE HYMAN: Like what, CZ? Like what would be the thing that you would want to see from Twitter in terms of a new feature?ĬHANGPENG ZHAO: I actually agree with a lot of what- Elon's ideas. There should new features every month, every week, every day. I think, as a user, my biggest problem with Twitter is over the last year or a couple of years, there hasn't been a lot of new features being introduced. So, many different ideas should be tried and should we try quickly. So it's really, literally, like throwing spaghetti on the wall and just hope something sticks. As an investor, as a user, and as also a fellow entrepreneur, I think it's very common to have many different ideas and see what sticks. JULIE HYMAN: Speaking of sticking to your knitting and running Binance, I mean, we see, obviously, Elon Musk, who is running a couple other companies- now he's sort of doing Twitter- and the initial reports coming out, frankly, have the feel of throwing spaghetti against the wall, as we say. We want to give all the support we can, but we'll see what Elon decides. But if my help is needed, I'm happy to, but I'm pretty busy running Binance. I don't enjoy those type of, like, long meetings, et cetera. And for any entrepreneur or any company in today's environment, we've got to make many adjustments as time goes on, so it's very natural for his thought process to change over time.ĬHANGPENG ZHAO: I'm not against it, but I'm also not actively pursuing it. I think we've got to get there in incremental steps. And then he also has said that maybe that's not possible, maybe it just won't work.Īnd I'm curious, at this juncture, what you're thinking about a crypto implementation for Twitter might look like and how realistic do you think it is.ĬHANGPENG ZHAO: I think Twitter today is a centralized platform, so moving that in one giant step into a fully decentralized platform is going to be quite difficult. We want to support him too.Īnd crypto- Twitter is a town square for crypto and most of the world's hot topics, so it's a good place to support free speech.ĭAVID HOLLERITH: And, CZ, you know, Elon Musk has sort of gone back and forth, at least from what we've seen in court documents that showed his text messages- he was initially talking about doing sort of a blockchain Twitter to improve some of the problems he's laid out for the company. I think, first of all, we want to support free speech, and this is one of the best choices- the best chances to do that. Global regulators worry the rise in privately operated currencies could undermine their control of the financial and monetary systems, increase systemic risks, promote financial crime and hurt investors.CHANGPENG ZHAO: I think, to be honest- to be honest, it's a bit of both. “Hey what’s going on with your doge customers? Shortly after he made that first historic journey, he testified before Congress about the wisdom of opening up the space program to women, and he did not cover himself in glory. She’ll break the record set by John Glenn who, in 1998, made his second trip to space-36 years after becoming the first American to orbit the Earth-at age 77. The fact that Funk is earning those wings as the oldest person to fly in space may be a smaller part of her larger story, but it comes with a certain circularity. “We’re excited to celebrate this moment with her and thrilled she’ll finally get to earn her astronaut wings.” After decades of waiting, it’s time-she finally gets to go,” says Linda Mills, Blue Origin’s vice president of communications. “This is Wally’s life ambition and she deserves it. But if Branson jumped the flight queue, Bezos jumped the Funk queue, inviting her last month to fly on his ship-immediately and for free. And yet she didn’t give up on the dream, deciding her best bet to make it to space was as a paying passenger: in 2010 she put a deposit down to fly aboard Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic spacecraft-in the event it ever flew.īranson did fly, on July 11, beating fellow billionaire Bezos to space by nine days (presuming everything goes as planned for Blue Origin next week). In 1979, when NASA first announced it was accepting female astronaut candidates, she applied for the job-four times, in fact-never making the cut, partly because of her age she was 40 by the time NASA began accepting female applicants. Still, space beckoned-and still Funk persisted. She estimates she trained more than 3,000 eventual pilots, and she has accumulated 19,600 hours of flight time herself-or the equivalent of 2.2 years at the stick. Instead she continued training other people to fly and ultimately assuming her positions with the FAA and the NTSB. Funk applied to become a commercial airline pilot and was again passed over, almost certainly because of her gender. The program folded after that and the women, who became popularly known as the Mercury 13, watched from the ground as the men of NASA flew and flew and flew. Running parallel to NASA’s Mercury program-which was then training the seven men who very much were going to go to space-it was designed to put a similar corps of women through exactly the same physical and mental tests being administered to the male astronauts to see how they fared.Īs it happened, they fared just fine, with 19 women enrolling and 13 graduating-Funk at the top of the class-proving that women could pass the same rigorous tests the men could. Privately funded by William Lovelace, a physician and flight surgeon in the Army Medical Corps Reserve, Women in Space was a sort of proof-of-concept idea. In 1961, Funk, then 21 and already a professional aviation instructor, joined what was formally known as the “Women in Space” program-an aspirational project that in fact had not a lick of a chance of ever sending so much as a single woman to so much as a single square foot of space. |
